「冰桶挑戰」（ice bucket challenge）活動概念起源眾說紛紜，其中一個版本為源自紐西蘭癌症協會今年7月初舉辦的募款活動，之後美國患有「肌萎縮性脊髓側索硬化症」（ALS，俗稱「漸凍症」）的波士頓學院前棒球員弗瑞茲（Pete Frates），上月29日以此方式在社群網站為漸凍症協會募款，要求挑戰者必須自拍潑冰水影片上傳網路，並指名另3個人接受挑戰，不願淋水者得捐款100美元（約3000元台幣）。

弗瑞茲發起「冰桶挑戰」後席捲全美，臉書創辦人薩克柏、微軟創辦人比爾蓋茲等名流注意並加入挑戰後，短短兩個多禮拜就募得近台幣4億元，去年同期僅募得約5076萬元台幣。（張渝萍／綜合外電報導）
